    • Bert Schwartz

      Bert Schwartz is one of the most versatile athletes ever in the City of Macon. Was a standout high school basketball player at Lanier, leading them to the State 1950 AA Championship. Was the team's leading scorer with 324 points. All Region I, AA all state selection and named to South Georgia All Star team. Awarded a basketball scholarship to Auburn University. Stayed there only one quarter before transferring to Mercer University. Four year letter winner for the Bears, playing on three Dixie Conference Championship teams and one runnerup. Was a three year starter who scored 865 points in his career. Against Millsaps in the 1952 Conference tournament he scored 22 points and pulled down 27 rebounds, 14 offensive and 13 defensive. Team Captain in 1953. Four year letter winner in tennis for the Bears and team captain of the 1953-54 squad. Compiled a 32-20 record in singles action and 16-12 mark in doubles playing a schedule that included matches against Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Emory and Oglethorpe. Five times runnerup in the Macon City Tennis Championship. Didn't start playing golf until after completing Mercer but won the Macon City Championship at Bowden in 1960 in one of only two appearances he made in that event. Has made 11 holes in one since he began playing golf. Member of the Mercer University Athletic Hall of Fame. (more)
