|Barry Veal has excelled as a high school and college athlete and as a high school baseball coach over the last three decades. During his high school playing career at First Presbyterian Day School he was all state basketball and baseball for the Vikings for three consecutive seasons. On the hardwood he scored 1,979 points, had 436 assists and 351 steals. His career scoring average was 19.2 with a 30 point per game average as a senior and a high point game of 52. In baseball he had a career batting average of .426 and a pitching record of 15-3.
Following his high school playing days he enrolled at Mercer University where he was a four year baseball starter and a two time A-Sun all Conference selection in 1985 and 1986 for the Bears. He is still in the Mercer record book tied for first in steals with 30 in 1985 and also in walks with 60.
In his 20 years of high school coaching at Jones County in Gray his teams have won 11 region titles and made it to the State final 3 times. At the start of the 2014 high school baseball season he had a career coaching record of 457-182.
