Rex Putnal, inducted 2012
|Outstanding football and basketball player at Lanier High School. As a senior, playing both quarterback and wide receiver, he led the Poets to a 7-3 record. As a quarterback he connected on 43 or 94 passes for 694 yards and 8 touchdowns. Missed his final game as a senior due to a shoulder separation. Was a first team AAA all State selection and chosen to play for the South team in the GACA All star game at Grant Field in Atlanta, a game won by the South. Led Lanier to a 26-3 record in basketball and a brth in the state playoffs averaging a team best 17.4 points a game. Scored 20 points in 70-60 region championship game win over Albany. Threee year letter winner at the University of Georgia. Caught the winning 44 yard touchdown in a 10-7 victory over the Florida Gators. Had started against the Gators after suffering a severe ankle injury three days earlier. Also still in the Georgia Record books with the number two average gain per reception of 26.4 yards during the 1971 season. Also third in that category for his career at 20.5 yards.|
